10x80 LA LEGGE DELLA STRADA (The Law Of The Street, 2003)

10x80

For any kind of keyboards

Originally inspired by Andreas F. Mueller's feature KINDER TÆTER (a radio documentary about youth delinquence in Berlin environs) the piece has been composed for Indian Organ. This instrument, whose sound is similar to a harmonium can be played only by the right hand, since the left one is engaged in moving the bellows. Just for this reason I've chosen to write the score on one only line in G Key and to change it occasionally in Bass Key when needed.
The piece can be played on any kind of keyboards: piano, harpsichord, harmonium, accordion, organ, synth or Ondes Martenot, other... When possible, the musician can choose if playing with one only hand or with both.

Originally the piece has been improvised as a series of sound illustrations of concepts suggested by the Feature author, as: "Loneliness", "The Law Of The Stronger", "Abandonment", "Everything Goes", "Violence", etc.
Successively the recording has been noted and re-arranged, hiding the themes suggested; in this way it has been transformed into a sort of long sound monologue without any reference to the original concepts (the only one kept appears in the title - THE LAW OF THE STREET).

The piece is based on a series of spontaneous melodies, chords and isolated notes, combined into a sort of slow motion river, without a real beginning and a real end.

Expecially in the version for piano, (but also in the others) I recommend the musician to play the whole piece mechanically, trying to follow exactly the metronomic values, like a sequencer. Always try to control the sound volume and finger pressure at the same level. Any kind of possible emotion should spread out directly from the score, without adding any romantic interpretation, just to respect the law of the street, cruel, strong, melancholic, monumental, like life and death.

Dur. 22’00”
